Annapurna Circuit trekking has been recognized as one of the World’s best trekking trails according to a survey by Modern Maturity (USA). This is a dramatic trek around the mighty Annapurna range, a journey that is regarded as one of the top ten walks in the world. Exploring the beautiful Annapurna region, you shall reach the highest point of the trek—the Thorong La Pass situated at an altitude of 5,416 meters. Passing through the settlements inhabited by Gurung, Thakali, and Manag communities, you shall enjoy every step you take in this beautiful region.
You shall explore the breathtaking landscape and rich cultural practices during this trek added with the adventure. This Classic Annapurna lodge trek is certainly enjoyed by trekkers from all around the world. Annapurna circuit trek was opened for foreign trekkers in 1977. You shall be trekking via the lush green forests, passing several small and large settlements, crossing through several suspension bridges, beside waterfalls, witnessing the staggering views of majestic mountains soaring high above you, and a peaceful spiritual attachment shall slowly engulf you as you pass beside several Mani Walls, Chortens, and monasteries.
With an aim to help you make most out of this trek, we have made some variations in the popular trekking routes. From Kathmandu, you shall ride all the way to Besisahar and start trekking from thereon. Trekking alongside the Marsyandi River, you shall pass through terraced fields, ascending and descending via the beautiful villages, witnessing the Annapurna range and other mountains. As we ascend, the valley becomes narrower, waterfalls plummet from high above, and the scenery gains a rugged alpine appearance.
The highest point of the Annapurna Circuit trekking is Thorong La pass at the top of the valley at 5,416m/17,765ft high. Due to the difficulties of crossing the pass, the circuit is usually walked in a counter clockwise direction. Traveling anti clockwise, the longer ascent and shorter descent from west to east is too much for many people to manage in one day. As we trek north of the Great Himalayan Divide there is a dramatic change as we enter the stark landscape of the Tibetan Plateau where the culture becomes predominantly Buddhist. We then head back down the great Kali Gandhaki Valley, which is believed to be the deepest gorge in the world. Our experienced local guide will take you through the revised route along the Valley to avoid road under construction between Muktinath to Kalopani. This section of our trek shall detour to follow the footpaths through pretty villages away from the road, but returns to the traditional circuit villages for overnight lodge stays.
Route
Kathmandu (1,345 m)- Besisahar (830 m)-Syange-Chamje (1,400 m)-Bagarchhap (2,160 m)-Chame (2,630 m)-Pisang (3,300 m)-Manang (3,540 m)-Yak Kharka (4,000 m)-Thorong Phedi (4,450 m)-Thorong La Pass (5,416 m)-Muktinath (3,800 m)-Marpha (2,670 m)-Kalopani (2,530 m)-Tatopani (1,200 m)-Ghorepani (2,850 m)-Tadapani (2,700 m)-Ghandruk-Pokhara (850 m)-Kathmandu (1,345 m)
Difficulty
Annapurna Circuit Trekking is a moderate level of trekking; it doesn’t involve any technical climbing. The only challenge you might face during this trek is while crossing the Thorong La Pass. Otherwise, you might not feel the trek too strenuous. You do not require any athletic body fitness to complete this trek. Ensure that you can do long duration of walking uphill and downhill for some days in a row. Also ensure that you don’t have any problems with your knees and ankles or any part that might directly hamper trekking. Altitude sickness can be another challenge that you might have to face during this trek. To avoid this you shall take sufficient time for acclimatization to let you adapt to the growing altitude. Taking sufficient rests, you shall complete this trek successfully.
Food and Accommodation
You shall get typical Nepalese local dishes, with some international varieties throughout your trek. However, taking the pervasive dish Dal Bhat for lunch is highly recommended. You shall be served with rice, lentils, green vegetables and other varieties of vegetables, Papad, pickles made locally, and salad. Macaroni, potatoes, noodles, spaghetti, etc. are some other alternatives to Dal Bhat. Similarly, there are plenty of teahouses, lodges, and hotels to stay at. However, the higher you ascend the limited the facilities in the accommodation become, serving with beds, blankets, and sometimes shared a bathroom.
Best Season
March through to May, and September through to November are considered the best time to do any trek in Nepal, including the Annapurna Circuit Trekking. During March through to May, though it might be pretty hot in the lower altitude areas of the Annapurna region, you shall be welcomed by the blooming red rhododendrons. This is also the time just before the starting of the monsoon, thus, you should not worry about the rainfall. Also, September through to November is the best time; the lower areas of the region aren’t too hot, and the high altitude areas aren’t too cold, either. But the nights can be pretty chilly and cold. Sometimes traveling during the extreme season during winter can make your trekking miserable.

The trail drops steeply to Syange at 1070meters from Bahundanda. Leaving Bahundanda a large waterfall may be seen. Crossing the Marsyangdi River on a suspension bridge. We then follow the river to the stone village of Jagat before climbing through forest to Chamje at 1400meters. Overnight at Guesthouse.
Our day begins with the rocky trail following the Marsyandi Rivers steadily uphill to Tal at 1675meters, the first village in the Manang district. We make a trail verse crossing a wide, flat valley. The journey continues up and down to Dharapani at 1890 meters. A stone entrance chorten typical of the Tibetan influenced villages. Upon reaching Bagarchhap at 2160 meters the typical flat roofed stone houses of local Tibetans design along with the village surrounded by apple Orchards and maize fields. Overnight at Guest house.
The trail climbs to Tyanja at 2360 meters, then continuing through forest, but near the river, to Kopar at 2590meters. As we reach the Chame, the headquarters of the Manang district, we are rewarded by the fine views of Annapurna II as you approach Chame & two small hot springs by the town. Along this route we are introduced to a local community said to have migrated from Tibet a long time past, noticeable by their different features. With them, they have bought local Tibetan house designs and maintained their ways. Overnight at Guest house
The day starts through deep forest in a steep and narrow valley, crosses a river on a long bridge at 2910meters. We then cross another bridge at 3040meters, from there the view of the soaring Paungda Danda rock face really begins to appear. From there the trail joins to climb to Pisang, which sprawls between 3200m & 3300meters. Overnight at Guest house.
Today we continue through the drier upper part of the Manang district, cut off from the full effect of the monsoon by the Annapurna Range. People of this region herd the yaks & raise crops for part of the year. They also continue to enjoy special trading rights gained way back in 1784. Leaving Pisang, we have alternate trails north and south of the Marsyangdi River which meets up again at Mungji. The southern route by Hongde, with its airstrip, at 3325meters which involves less climbing than the northern route via Ghyaru, though there are better views on the trail that follows the northern bank of the river. From Mungji, the trail continues past the picturesque but partially hidden village of Bryanga at 3475meters to nearby Manang at 3540meters. Overnight at Guest house.
Today we spend a day acclimatizing in Manang. The whole day we spend doing some fine day walks and over viewing the magnificent views around the village & the day time is best to gain altitude. At the end of the day, we return back to our accommodation & have a night rest. Overnight at Guest house.
Today we leave Manang, & the trail makes an ascent of nearly 500meters to the Yak Kharka. We make the climb steadily through Tenki Manang, leaving the Marsyangi Valley. Continuing along the Jarsang Khola Valley, we reach Yak Kharka at 4000 meters, there we see the many yaks and vegetations steadily more sparse. Overnight at Guest house.
After asending for two hours the trail descends to cross the river at 4310meters we then climb up to Thorong Phedi at 4450meters where we have recently found some good Guesthouses built. Our overnight stay will be there. Overnight at Guest house.
Today is a long trek starting before sunrise at 4 am to reach the pass by 9 – 10 am otherwise weather conditions will greatly affect the journey. We cross over at an altitude of 5416 meters we can be exposed to strong winds if crossing too late. We start to climb steeply that is regularly used and easy to follow. However, the problem may arise due to the altitude and snow. It often causes terrible problems to cross the pass if it is covered by heavy snow. About four hours climb up to the pass marked by the chortens & prayer flags. As you reach the top, you are rewarded by the magnificent view from the top with another 4 hours trek will take to the holy town of Muktinath.
To make your experience better, we have kept a drive from Jomsom to Tatopani which will take about 5 hours. We will use a local shared 4WD vehicle to descend through the Kali Gandaki River Valley. The vehicle will be shared among our own group or with travelers of other companies. But, if our group size is bigger, for example 4 and above clients, we will arrange private transfer. On the way, we will encounter the world’s deepest gorge, Kopchepani. Tatopani is famous for its hot springs. This is the best place to relax our body after a long trek. We will spend another day relaxing at this spot.
We leave the Kali Gandaki and head up the Ghar Khola valley. The trail leads us through a terraced farmland with mountains all around. We pass through the villages of Shikha and Chitre before reaching a beautiful rhododendron forest. When in bloom the rhododendron trees with its average height of up to 100″ will be covered with pink or red flowers. Walking further we reach Ghorepani, a beautiful village located at a ridge top. Overnight in Ghorepani.
Very early in the morning, we start an hour hiking to Poon Hill at an elevation of 3,210 m – a brilliant spectacle. This vantage point provides unobstructed views of the early morning sunrise over the high Himalayas, weather permitting. There we spend about an hour. We return to Ghorepani where we take a hot breakfast at the hotel. We trek down towards Tikhedunga, walking down along the ridges and through rhododendron forests before reaching Tikhedhunga.
Upon reaching Tikhedhunga, we will take a short break and then take a drive to Nayapul in a local shared 4WD or bus. The drive will take about 1.5 hours on a dirt road. At Nayapul, we will stop for a tea break and change our vehicle. From here onward until Pokhara, the drive, which takes about 1 hour on concrete paved road, will be in a private tourist vehicle. Your guide will travel together with you and make all the arrangements for the transfers.
Included meals:Breakfast Lunch Dinne
After breakfast, we say goodbye to the beautiful lake city of Pokhara and drive towards Kathmandu. After reaching Kathmandu, we have the rest of the day off to rest or do some souvenir shopping. To celebrate the successful completion of our journey, we will have a farewell dinner in the evening. Overnight in Kathmandu.
